Few instruments deliver so much fun so fast as the drums. You sit down, you hit something, and music happens immediately. That is exactly why drums are the ideal way into music for so many people, whether you are six or sixty. At our music school in Munich, we see it every week: people who have never touched an instrument playing a simple groove after their very first lesson.
Why drums are a great first instrument
On the drums, rhythm takes centre stage — the foundation of all music. Unlike the piano or guitar, you do not have to juggle melody, harmony and pitch all at once. You focus on the essentials: timing, pulse, and the physical feel of the music.
That comes with some very real advantages:
- Fast rewards — a simple rock beat is playable within a few weeks and sounds like "real" music straight away.
- Body and mind together — both hands, both feet, all coordinated. It is a fantastic workout for your motor skills.
- Stress relief — drums are a wonderful outlet. After a long day at the office, hitting something is surprisingly good for you.
Rhythm is not something you either "have" or "don't have." Rhythm can be trained — and the drum kit is the best gym for it.
What age can kids start?
The most common question from parents is: "Is my child old enough?" In our experience, things really click from around six years old. By that age, most kids are tall enough to reach a kit adjusted to their size, and their attention span is long enough for a structured lesson.
What matters most to us is a playful approach. Children learn rhythm through movement, speech and their favourite songs, not through dry theory. If your child loves banging on pots and pans, the drums are exactly the right place for that energy.
For younger children around four or five, we often recommend early musical education first — discovering pulse and beat through play before sitting down at a real kit.
Adults on the drums — never too late
A widespread myth says instruments can only be learned as a child. That simply is not true. Some of our most rewarding success stories in Munich come from adults finally chasing a long-held dream.
Adults even bring real advantages: they grasp connections faster, practise more deliberately, and know exactly why they are there. Whether as a counterweight to work, a new hobby at forty, or a late start in a band, the body learns at any age. It might take a little longer than at eight, but the journey is every bit as joyful.
E-drums or an acoustic kit?
This decision faces almost every beginner — especially in the city, where neighbours are close.
The acoustic kit
An acoustic drum set sounds alive, responds finely to every nuance, and simply feels "real." The downside in a Munich rental flat is obvious: it is loud. Without a good rehearsal space or very tolerant neighbours, practising can get tricky.
The e-drum kit
Electronic kits are considerably quieter, can be played with headphones, and fit into a small flat in Schwabing or Haidhausen. Modern e-drums feel very good today and are ideal for practising.
Our honest recommendation:
- For practising at home — e-drums, especially in a city flat. Peace with the neighbours included.
- For feel and sound — get to an acoustic kit regularly, for example in our lesson room.
