Music Theory Made Simple: Why Math and Music Belong Together

In 1787, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart created a system of 272 musical bars and a table of rules.

The idea was simple: roll dice 16 times, follow the table — get a unique minuet. Different every time. Mathematically: billions of combinations.

This was the first music algorithm in history. Two hundred years before the computer.

Pythagoras and the First Theory of Sound

It all started with one string.

Pythagoras noticed: divide a string exactly in half and you get the same note one octave higher. Ratio 2:1. Divide into three parts — a perfect fifth. Ratio 3:2.

This mathematics still underlies all Western music today. Every chord you play is a Pythagorean ratio.

Why Theory Is Not Boring

Many students fear theory. "That's for smart people." "It's too complicated."

But theory is simply an explanation of why something sounds the way it sounds.

Why does C major sound happy? Why does A minor sound sad? Why does a jazz chord create tension?

Once you understand the "why" — you hear music differently. Every song becomes a puzzle you can solve.

The Fretster System: Theory Through Practice

We never teach theory separately from playing. Every theoretical concept is immediately anchored on the instrument.

  • Learned what a fifth is → immediately played it
  • Understood the structure of the major scale → played it in three keys
  • Heard a dominant chord → found it in a favorite song

Theory without practice is dead. Practice without theory is blind.
