Fred Sings & Plays: music games that train your ear
Sing or play a note – Fred jumps, flies and builds. Free in the browser, no sign-up. From age five to pro.
FRED SINGS & PLAYS · AGE 5+
Hürdenlauf – Hurdles
You hear a note, sing or play it back – Fred jumps the hurdle. He waits patiently until you hit it. First one note, then two, then three.
▶︎ PlayLaternen – Lanterns
Hold the note steady and the lantern fills with light. Wobbling costs light. One, two, three seconds – the foundation of clean long notes.
▶︎ PlayEcho-Vogel – Echo bird
The bird sings two or three notes, you sing or play them back. Feather by feather lights up. That is ear training without feeling like it.
▶︎ PlayTon-Alphabet – Note alphabet
Notes are named like the alphabet: C D E F G A B. Step by step up the staircase – you learn scales with your ear instead of a ruler.
▶︎ PlayBallonflug – Balloon flight
Flutter your lips (brrr) and glide up and down with your voice – Fred flies along and collects stars. Voice only: this is how singers warm up their vocal cords.
▶︎ PlayFOR ADVANCED PLAYERS & PROS
Modes from Ionian to Locrian, triads, seventh chords and diatonic arpeggios – in all 12 keys. The tempo ladder climbs as long as you play clean and in time.
HOW IT WORKS
Open the page, choose your instrument, allow the browser to use the microphone.
Tap a game. Fred plays you the note – then it is your turn.
Hit the note and you move on. Miss it and Fred waits. No stress, no game over.
With voice, guitar, bass or piano
You pick your instrument at the start. With your voice you practise hitting and holding notes, with guitar and bass clean picking and finding the note on the fretboard, at the piano finding the key and sustaining it. The same five games, four points of view.
Why a game and not a worksheet?
Hitting, holding and remembering notes are the three basic skills for any instrument – and exactly the ones that get boring fastest when practising at home. A game gives instant feedback: you do not just hear that you were off, you see it. It is the same principle as in a lesson, except Fred never gets tired. Our tip: warm up with a game for the first five minutes of every practice session – the rest sounds better afterwards.
Frequently asked questions about the music games
What age are the games for?
From about five, if an adult allows the microphone and sits in on the first game. There is no upper limit: adult beginners use Hurdles and Lanterns to practise hitting and holding notes, advanced players use the Echo bird in keys with many accidentals.
Do I need an instrument?
No. With “Stimme” (voice) you only need yourself and the microphone of your phone or laptop. If you have a guitar, bass or piano, choose that instrument – then Fred expects the note from there and shows you the fingering or key.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes, in Chrome or Safari. Tap “Mikrofon starten” and allow access. In noisy surroundings the game recognises notes less reliably – a quiet room or headphones help.
Is my voice recorded?
No. The sound is analysed only in your browser to detect the pitch. Nothing is recorded, uploaded or stored. Close the page and the microphone is off.
Why does it say “Beta”?
The games are new and still growing: graphics, music and keys are being added, and the texts exist only in German so far. If something does not work, send us a quick WhatsApp – every piece of feedback goes straight to the developer, which is us.
Do the games replace lessons?
No, they are the part of a lesson you can do alone at home: warming up, hitting notes, training your ear. Posture, technique, rhythm in an ensemble and a person who listens to you – that is the trial lesson in Munich.
