Music lessons for kids in Munich
Children do not learn music out of duty but because after a week it already sounds like something. So we start with real songs, not finger exercises – one-to-one or in a kids’ band of three to five children. Two locations in Munich: Obersendling and Allach. Lessons in English, German or Russian. The trial lesson is free for kids.
From what age – and which instrument?
The honest answer depends on the instrument, not the calendar. These limits have proven themselves in our lessons:
Violin
Small sizes from 1/16, classical technique without drill. The earliest instrument we teach.
Piano
Press a key, the note is there – no posture like the violin, no strength like the guitar. That is why it is the classic start.
Drums
Rhythm is what children do anyway. At the kit they learn to organise it – plus pulse, coordination and listening.
Guitar
1/2 or 3/4 size kids’ guitar, chords and first songs. Electric or acoustic – we look at what the child wants, not what one “should” learn first.
Bass, singing, saxophone
Bass needs hands for a short-scale neck, singing a voice that is still developing and needs gentle guidance, saxophone breath and firmly set teeth.
Two paths: one-to-one or kids’ band
One-to-one lesson, 30 minutes a week
The classic start for children: one teacher, one child, one song that sounds by the end of the lesson. For five- to eight-year-olds 30 minutes is just right – attention does not last longer, and shorter is not worth the trip.
Kids’ band, ages 6–12
Three to five children, a 60-minute band rehearsal a week, each on their own instrument. Playing together from the first lesson, own songs and favourites, no sheet-music pressure – and an annual concert in front of an audience. One-to-one lessons can run alongside.
Holiday workshops and the Summer Band Camp come on top – dates are on the workshops page. → Workshops
What a kids’ lesson looks like with us
- Five minutes of warm-up – often with one of our music games: hit the note, tap the rhythm, make Fred jump.
- The piece of the week: a song the child knows and likes. Technique comes through the song, not before it.
- A small goal for home that is reachable in ten minutes a day. We do not ask more of primary-school children.
- Parents may listen in – and hear at the end what “counts” at home this week.
For parents: what we promise – and what we don’t
We promise that your child makes music in every lesson, not just hears about it. We do not promise sight-reading within three months – for children, reading comes after playing, just like with speech. If an instrument does not fit after a few months, we switch without drama. And if practising at home turns into a fight, we talk about it before the child gives up – we wrote a whole article about that.

Frequently asked questions from parents
How much is the trial lesson for kids?
Nothing. The trial lesson is free for children, lasts 30 minutes, and a parent can sit in. Afterwards you decide at your own pace – no contract in the lesson.
My child is 4 – is that too early?
Not for violin; piano and drums from 5. For guitar we recommend from 6, for bass, singing and saxophone from 8. If you are unsure, come to the trial lesson – we will say honestly whether it makes sense yet or whether a year of rhythm games at home is better.
Do we need our own instrument?
Not for the trial lesson – instruments are ready in the room. For practising at home, yes; after the trial we tell you which size fits (1/2 or 3/4 guitar, 1/8 violin and so on) and where to rent or buy second-hand. No expensive purchase before the first lesson.
One-to-one or band – which is better to start?
Both work. One-to-one is calmer and adapts to the child’s pace. The kids’ band motivates through the others and trains listening. Many children do both. For shy children we recommend starting one-to-one.
How much does my child need to practise at home?
Ten minutes a day, daily rather than once for a long time. Our free browser programs and games help: metronome, Rhythm Blocks, Fred Sings & Plays. Practising without feedback is where children stop.
Where are the locations and what are the times?
Obersendling (Hatzelweg 25) and Allach (Gustav-Otto-Bogen 13). Kids’ lessons are in the afternoon after school and after-school care; we agree the exact time at the trial lesson.
What language are the lessons in?
German, Russian or English – tell us when you get in touch what works best for your child.
Ask about a free trial lesson
Nothing. The trial lesson is free for children, lasts 30 minutes, and a parent can sit in. Afterwards you decide at your own pace – no contract in the lesson.
